Getting Started: Set Up Koki Flashcards
Welcome to Koki Flashcards! Follow these simple steps to personalize your learning experience and get started with smart vocabulary practice.
Step-by-step guide
- 1
Explore the App
When you open Koki for the first time, you'll see a quick introduction to its main features.
Follow the introduction to learn how Koki works, or tap Skip to move straight to the setup process.
- 2
Discover Spaced Repetition System (SRS)
Koki uses Spaced Repetition System (SRS), a learning technique that helps you remember vocabulary for longer by reviewing words at the right time.
Instead of reviewing every word equally often, Koki automatically adjusts your review schedule based on how well you remember each word:
- Words you struggle with: Reviewed more frequently.
- Words you remember well: Reviewed at longer intervals.
This helps you spend less time on familiar words and focus on those that need more practice.
- 3
Choose Your Native Language
Select your native language and tap Continue.
Koki uses this language to provide translations and explanations, making it easier to understand new vocabulary and example sentences.
- 4
Set Your Name and Daily Study Reminder
Enter your name and choose when you'd like Koki to remind you to study.
For example, if you prefer studying in the evening, set your reminder to 8:00 PM.
That's it! You're ready to explore Koki's vocabulary packs and start learning.
Choose the Right Vocabulary Pack
Koki offers a wide range of vocabulary packs across different languages, topics, and proficiency levels.
You can take a quick level test to get personalized recommendations or browse the available packs to find what suits your learning goals.
Step-by-step guide
- 1
Take a Level Test
Not sure where to start? Take a short test to help Koki assess your current proficiency level.
Based on your results, Koki will recommend vocabulary packs that match your ability.
- 2
Explore Personalized Recommendations
Visit the For You section to discover vocabulary packs recommended for your level.
These suggestions help you find suitable learning materials without spending time searching through the entire library.
- 3
Browse and Choose a Vocabulary Pack
Select the language you want to learn and explore vocabulary packs by topic, difficulty, or learning goal.
Each pack provides useful information to help you decide:
- Word Count: The total number of words included in the pack.
- Learners: The number of people who have studied the pack.
- Level: The recommended proficiency level.
Choose a pack that matches your current ability and learning goals.
- 4
Start Learning and Track Your Progress
Once you've chosen a pack, you can start learning using any of Koki's three main study modes:
- Flashcards: Learn and review vocabulary using Spaced Repetition System (SRS).
- Writing: Strengthen your memory through listening, spelling, and writing practice.
- Quiz: Test your knowledge with interactive exercises.
Once you start studying, the pack will automatically appear in your Learning section, where you can track your progress and pick up where you left off.
You can also study multiple vocabulary packs at the same time. Koki brings together words that are due for review, so you can review them all in one place.
Flashcards: Learn and Remember Vocabulary
Flashcards are one of Koki's core learning features. They help you build vocabulary through interactive cards, pronunciation practice, and smart reviews powered by Spaced Repetition System (SRS).
You can also personalize your study experience, focus on difficult words, and track your progress as you learn.
Step-by-step guide
- 1
Flip Cards, Translate Content, and Track Your Memory
When you start a Flashcard session, Koki displays one card at a time.
Tap a card to flip it and reveal its meaning. You can also tap a definition or example sentence to see a translation in your selected native language.
After reviewing the card, indicate how well you remember it:
- Swipe right: If you remember the word.
- Swipe left: If you don't remember the word yet.
Koki uses your responses to track your progress and schedule future reviews.
- 2
Practice Difficult Words
Words you haven't remembered are automatically collected in the Difficult Words button on the Flashcard screen.
Tap this button to practice those words using different learning activities:
- Quiz: Test your memory with interactive questions.
- Speaking: Practice saying difficult words aloud.
- Writing: Improve your spelling and recall through writing exercises.
This allows you to focus on the words that need more attention without repeating the entire vocabulary pack.
- 3
Use Built-in Flashcard Learning Tools
Koki provides several useful tools directly on the Flashcard screen:
- Speech Mode: Say the word aloud, and Koki automatically advances to the next card when your pronunciation is recognized as correct.
- Pronunciation: Practice pronouncing the word on your current card.
- Audio: Tap to hear how the word is pronounced.
- Notes: Add personal notes, such as your own example sentences or memory tips.
- Hint Mode: Tap the clover icon to reveal helpful hints when you struggle to remember a word.
- Report Error: Report incorrect words, definitions, or examples so the Koki team can review them.
You can combine these tools to create a learning experience that works best for you.
- 4
Remember Words for Longer with Spaced Repetition System (SRS)
Koki uses Spaced Repetition System (SRS) to help you retain vocabulary over time.
Instead of reviewing every word equally often, Koki automatically adjusts review intervals based on your learning history and responses.
- Words you struggle with: Appear again sooner.
- Words you remember well: Are scheduled for review at longer intervals.
This helps you spend more time on difficult vocabulary and less time reviewing words you already know.
- 5
View Words You're Learning and Words You've Mastered
You can track your vocabulary progress directly from the Flashcard screen.
- Learning Words: Tap the number of words you're currently learning to view the full list.
- Mastered Words: Tap the number of words you've remembered to see the vocabulary you've already mastered.
These lists make it easy to check your progress and review your learning status.
- 6
Customize Your Learning Experience
Open the Settings menu on the right side of the Flashcard screen to personalize your study sessions.
The menu includes the following options:
Choose Vocabulary Groups
Browse the available vocabulary groups and select the ones you want to focus on.
For example, if a vocabulary pack contains multiple topics, you can choose a specific group instead of studying all the words at once.
Filter by Tags
View the tags assigned to your Flashcards and select the ones you want to practice.
You can also create custom tags to organize your vocabulary, such as "Important Words," "Easily Confused," or "Need More Practice."
Change the Front of Your Cards
Choose what appears on the front of each Flashcard to change how you practice.
For example:
- Word First: See the word and try to recall its meaning.
- Meaning First: See the meaning and try to recall the word.
Switching between these options helps you strengthen your memory in different ways.
Advanced Settings
Customize the number of words you study and adjust review intervals used by Spaced Repetition System (SRS).
These settings allow you to adapt your learning schedule to your available time and personal goals.
Update Vocabulary Data
Download the latest updates to your vocabulary pack, including new or revised content from Koki.
Reset Learning Progress
If you want to start a vocabulary pack again from the beginning, you can reset its learning progress.
Important: Resetting your progress deletes your existing learning data for that pack. Make sure you want to start over before confirming.
- 7
Complete a 20-Word Study Round
By default, each Flashcard study round contains 20 words.
At the end of the round, Koki displays a summary showing:
- Remembered Words: Words you successfully recalled.
- Words to Review: Words you haven't remembered yet.
You can continue to the next round or switch to another learning mode:
- Pronunciation: Practice saying the words aloud.
- Writing: Reinforce your memory through spelling and writing.
- Quiz: Test what you've learned with interactive exercises.
Combining different study modes helps reinforce your vocabulary through multiple types of practice.
Writing: Improve Your Writing and Spelling
Koki's Writing feature helps you strengthen your vocabulary, improve spelling, and develop your writing skills through different types of practice.
With four writing modes, you can practice handwriting, review vocabulary using Spaced Repetition System (SRS), focus on difficult words, or improve your listening and writing skills with AI-generated passages.
Step-by-step guide
- 1
Practice Handwriting
For languages with different writing systems, such as Chinese, Japanese, and Korean, Koki offers handwriting practice to help you become familiar with writing characters.
Follow the guided strokes and practice writing directly on your screen.
This helps you learn character shapes, become familiar with stroke order, and improve your ability to recognize and remember written words.
- 2
Practice Writing with Spaced Repetition System (SRS)
Koki's basic Writing mode uses Spaced Repetition System (SRS) to help you review vocabulary at the right time.
Listen to the word being spoken, then type the word you hear.
Each writing round contains 20 words. After completing a round, you can review your results to see which words you spelled correctly and which ones need more practice.
Words you struggle with will be scheduled for additional review, helping you improve your spelling and long-term memory.
- 3
Focus on Difficult Words
The Difficult Words mode helps you practice vocabulary that you frequently forget or have trouble spelling.
Instead of reviewing every word in your vocabulary pack, you can focus on the words that need extra attention.
Listen carefully, write the correct word, and continue practicing to strengthen your memory and spelling accuracy.
- 4
Practice Listening and Writing with AI
With AI Writing, Koki generates a passage for you to practice listening and writing.
Listen to the audio, then write down the passage you hear.
This activity helps you develop several skills at the same time:
- Listening Comprehension: Improve your ability to understand spoken language.
- Writing and Spelling: Practice writing complete sentences accurately.
- Vocabulary in Context: Reinforce vocabulary by hearing and using words in meaningful sentences.
AI Writing is especially useful when you're ready to move beyond individual words and practice longer passages.
Quiz: Practice and Test Your Knowledge
Koki's Quiz feature helps you reinforce vocabulary through interactive exercises that improve memory, listening, spelling, and pronunciation.
With four different quiz modes, you can test your knowledge in multiple ways, from matching words with their meanings to practicing pronunciation with AI-powered feedback.
Step-by-step guide
- 1
Mixed Quiz — Practice with Different Question Types
Mixed Quiz combines several types of questions into a single practice session, helping you review vocabulary in different ways.
Depending on the question, you may be asked to:
- Listen and Identify: Listen to a word and choose the correct answer.
- Fill in the Blanks: Complete a word or sentence by filling in missing information.
- Picture Quiz: Look at an image and identify the matching word.
- Multiple Choice: Select the correct answer from the available options.
By combining different question types, Mixed Quiz helps you strengthen vocabulary recognition, recall, and listening skills.
- 2
Match Quiz — Match Words with Their Meanings
In Match Quiz, your goal is to match each vocabulary word with its correct meaning.
Simply connect the matching pairs to complete the exercise.
This mode helps you recognize vocabulary more quickly, strengthen word-meaning associations, and improve your recall through interactive practice.
- 3
Fill in the Blanks — Complete the Missing Words
Fill in the Blanks challenges you to complete sentences or exercises by entering the missing words.
Read the provided content, identify what's missing, and fill in the correct answers.
This exercise helps you:
- Reinforce vocabulary in context.
- Improve spelling and word recall.
- Understand how words are used in sentences.
You can also export exercises as PDF files to save, print, or complete later without using the app.
- 4
Pronunciation — Practice Words and Sentences with AI
Koki's Pronunciation mode lets you practice speaking both individual words and complete sentences.
This mode uses Spaced Repetition System (SRS) to schedule reviews based on your learning progress, helping you spend more time practicing words and sentences that need improvement.
To practice:
- Open Pronunciation mode and select a word or sentence.
- Read the displayed content aloud.
- Koki recognizes your speech and evaluates your pronunciation.
- Review the result and try again to improve your accuracy.
Need help with pronunciation?
If your pronunciation isn't quite right, tap Show Pronunciation Guide.
Koki's AI will analyze your pronunciation, highlight areas that need improvement, and provide guidance to help you pronounce the word or sentence more accurately.
You can repeat the exercise as often as needed to build confidence and improve your speaking skills.

Koki offers several ways to create cards.
Create Cards with AI
Take a photo or enter a passage of text, and let Koki's AI help turn the content into flashcards.
This is especially useful when you want to create study materials from notes, textbooks, or other learning resources without entering every card manually.

To get started:
- Download the official CSV template provided by Koki.
- Fill in your content using the required format.
- Save the completed CSV file.
- Import it into your deck.
Make sure you follow the template structure to avoid import errors.
Add Cards Manually or with AI Assistance
You can also create flashcards one at a time by entering information such as words, meanings, and example sentences.
If you've entered only part of a card, tap the AI button to let Koki help complete the missing information.
This gives you the flexibility to create cards yourself while saving time with AI assistance.
- 4
Add Images and Audio to Your Flashcards
Make your flashcards more engaging and easier to remember by adding visual and audio content.
Koki provides:
- Built-in Image Library: Choose from available images to illustrate your cards.
- Text-to-Speech (TTS): Automatically generate audio from text using professional-quality voices.
These tools help you create flashcards that combine text, images, and audio without having to prepare every resource yourself.
- 5
Organize and Move Cards Between Decks
As your flashcard collection grows, you may want to reorganize your study materials.
Koki allows you to move cards from one deck to another, making it easier to group related content without having to recreate cards.
For example, you can move vocabulary from different decks into a single topic-specific deck for more focused practice.
- 6
Share Your Decks with the Community
Once you've created a useful flashcard deck, you can make it public and share it with the Koki community.
Other learners can discover your deck, unlock it with Points, and use it for their own studies.
